In real life, the design was cobbled together by a team of prop experts from bits and pieces that matched the intended look. Thought dead, Darth Maul survived his injuries by focusing on his hatred of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Jedi who cut him in half. His shattered body was dumped amid the refuse of the junk planet Lotho Minor, where the once deadly warrior fell into madness, staying alive on a diet of vermin. When found by his brother Savage Opress, Maul had no memory of who he was, rambled nonsensically, and had built hideous spider-like legs in place of his severed ones.

Sidious came to Mandalore where he declared the Zabrak brothers to be his rivals. The Sith Master killed Savage Opress and took Maul captive -- but not before joyfully torturing his old apprentice with Force lightning. Maul could have returned to something similar to McCaig’s early artwork in Solo, as unused concept designs depict the villain with long hair. It was probably the right decision though to stick with the instantly recognizable silhouette of the character for his cameo.

His other Star Wars brainchildren include R2-D2’s “voice” and the “peow! The visual effects used for lightsaber blades were overseen by Korean animator Nelson Shin, who had previously worked on the 1970s Pink Panther movies. He came in after Lucas was unhappy with the original effect (they had intended to use a spinning dowel on the blade during shooting, which would reflect light). Instead, Nelson Shin used rotoscoping, a time-consuming animation technique that involves tracing over footage frame by frame.
Old concept art gives a peek at what the Darth Maul game could have been
He used a flash tube from an old 1940s camera, with hard plastic ‘T’ tracks from a display cabinet glued to the outside (the black bits are not, as is believed by some, wiper blades). N.B. We’ve used the structure of the movie series as a template for this article, and we’ve paid most heed to the designs that are relevant to the films. There are even more, but covering them would mean this article basically eats up the whole site…If you want other weird lightsaber designs, check out this list. Opress brought Maul back to his homeworld of Dathomir, where the Nightsister Mother Talzin used dark magicks to restore the fallen Sith’s mind and body. Maul reemerged, took Opress as his apprentice, and became obsessed with Kenobi. He and his brother began terrorizing worlds and allied with Death Watch, Black Sun, and the Pyke syndicate to form the Shadow Collective, a group which took over Mandalore.
Although she was a completely new character, her look was actually inspired by a fellow Sith. We only briefly referenced the Lightwhip, and we didn’t even get near the Lightclub (a massive version of the lightsaber used by Gamorrean Dark Jedi). The dual-phase lightsaber – with a blade that could extend to double the length – also got left out. And no one should ever forget the Sabercane from Knights of the Old Republic. It’s also worth noting the ragged nature of the beam that’s emitting in all three directions from Ren’s broadsaber. Rather, it looks like scavenged-together imitation that’s barely able to contain its power.
Said cameo was clearly meant to set up Maul having a bigger role in the sequel, too, but this likely won’t happen now due to the box office failure of Solo. We have heard that Lucasfilm plans to shift its future spinoff projects into TV shows for Disney Plus instead, however, so hopefully we haven’t seen the last of Maul in the Star Wars saga just yet.

Maul Arrives on Tatooine
StarWars.com covered an expansive oral history on The Phantom Menace where the people behind the film discussed how it came to be. Iain McCaig, who served as the concept artist for the movie, revealed that Darth Maul was initially described in the script as "a vision from your worst nightmare" and so that was what he created. The first Darth Maul lightsaber hilt was, as mentioned, two hilts forged together, making it about 49.5 centimeters long with a blade extending from each end. Made of alloy metal, it’s a rather simple design with black accent markings and red buttons. It is a red lightsaber, as it is standard for a Sith Lord to wield a red saber.
Needless to say, this is one tragic character whose look truly shows what she has endured. There’s also the spear-like Pike lightsaber (above left) and the crooked-handled Tonfa lightsaber (above right) from The Force Unleashed. We’ve not found space to mention the Protosaber, the Forcesaber, and The First Blade, formerly-canon precursors to the traditional lightsaber. Maybe the tables have turned, and it’s now the bad guys struggling through a depression that necessitates make-do-and-mend weaponry.
Actor Ray Park put on a small, silver earring before sitting down to do the Darth Maul makeup, and only noticed it later. A canonical connection between the Dathomiri witches and the Sith would only be established later on in The Clone Wars, and now continues into the new canon, but the connection was always there in the art. This was confirmed by Bounty Hunter creative director Jon Knoles when he spoke to Screenrant.
His multi-talented weapon helps make The Inquisitor a menacing public-facing representative of the Empire, even in a show where Darth Vader occasionally turns up. The manifold characters who lost their limbs in Star Wars could have done with keeping a compact spare handy. Left to his own devices, Maul used the power of the dark side to rip the hyperdrive from the hurtling cruiser, sending all aboard to certain death when the ship was caught in the gravitational moon. Then he stole the ship Ahsoka Tano had planned to flee in, leaving her to die with the rest of the crew. Tom Percival After graduating with an MA in journalism from the University of Salford, Tom set out to make a career for himself in the heady world of entertainment journalism. Yeah, McCaig apparently based Maul’s facial tattoos on old clowns like Bozo.
Maul (he’s technically not “Darth” by this point, having been replaced as Sidious’ apprentice by Count Dooku and later Darth Vader) swears vengeance on both Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former master, Darth Sidious. He has a rematch with Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars era, and he even confronts Darth Sidious, though he is bested and loses both his lightsaber and the Mandalorian Darksaber that he’d acquired while consolidating power. Shockingly, The Clone Wars reveals that Darth Maul survived his duel with Obi-Wan, saved by Savage Opress — his brother. Savage even recovered Darth Maul’s lightsaber (half of it) and gives it back to him.
Obi-Wan’s lightsaber from A New Hope has a notably different design to the two Skywalker ones, despite being built by the same creative team. As you might imagine, there’s a bit more at play behind the scenes with this one than cupboard bits, a camera flash, and a calculator. Quickly, Maul deduced that Obi-Wan would not be hiding on this planet for no reason; no, he was protecting something -- or someone.
